Sometimes you read a portion of the Word that just jumps off the page and into your heart. That is what happened to me when I read Daniel 3:8-30.
It is the story of the three young Jewish men who had been carried off to Babylon. When King Nebuchadnezzar made a decree that everyone had to bow down to his gods and to the golden statue he had made of himself, these three young men refused.
The king was so mad! He said, “None can save you from my hand.” These men were so brave and so strong in their faith that they told the king, “Our God is able to save us, but even if He doesn’t we still will not bow down.”
That is when my heart swelled. We all go through hard times, some unbearable times. People would say how can you trust a God who lets you suffer like this? Job’s friends advised him to “curse God and die”. Sometimes giving up seems like the easy way out.
But when you know your God, the One who created you, died for your sins, and has planned for an eternity with you, you don’t give up…no matter what you face right now. The fire may be hot, but it won’t last long, then you’ll be with Him. When He is in the fire with you, you can stand anything. What would be unbearable would be to bow down to the king’s gods, and disappoint the one true God, the One you love.
No matter what we face now, it is only for a few brief moments. Our faith and our trust is in the One true God who made heaven and earth. He will not forsake His children. He has had a plan since the foundation of the earth. He is not off schedule. He knows what He is doing. We may not understand His ways at this time, but I believe we will all be able to see His Great Plan, and the history of how He worked it out in time when we live without the constraints of time in eternity. Then we will come to know and understand our God in deeper ways than are possible now.
Never give up! Even now, we may find we are untouched by the fire, walking freely with the Son of God, no smell of smoke on our garments, and our hair untouched. It may look like we are doomed to be thrown into the fiery furnace, but if God is in there with us, no harm can befall us. In eternity what a marvelous thing it will be to look at the record of history, and see what He planned, and how He carried everything out…especially if we refused to bow down! Now is the time, this is the generation to keep the Faith. Believe with all your heart in the God who is able to deliver!
