Have you ever considered what it would have been like to live when Jesus walked the earth? What it would have been like to see Him open the eyes of the blind or heal lepers? I have wondered why there were not many more Christians. So many were attracted to Jesus and followed Him to hear Him speak. They sometimes forgot to eat, so much so that Jesus fed 5000 from only 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. Then the disciples gathered 12 baskets full of leftovers! That would have been incredible to see.
Many followed Him only for the food or the healing. Jesus said as much, but it is hard to understand how they did not recognize Him as more than an ordinary man. Of course many did. When He spoke the word, evil spirits had to obey, disease had to leave, blind eyes open, deaf ears began to hear. He was the creator of everything, and it was all held together by Him. When He spoke the waves and wind had to calm…creation responded to His Word.
No one was able to take Him into custody until it was the right time for Jesus to lay down His life. No one took His life. He laid down His life for us. He died to pay the price for our sin, and on the third day He rose again. He came out of the tomb, and many saw Him. When He arose, history recorded that the tombs of many of the Jewish leaders who had previously died also opened and those resurrected were seen in the city for 40 days. The Word says Jesus led captive a train of vanquished foes when He came out of Hades. (Death and Hell could not hold Jesus, nor the ones He had purchased!) Imagine what these men had to say to the people of Jerusalem during that 40 days!
Yes, those would have been interesting times to live in, but I am equally amazed that today we can know Jesus. We can hear His voice, feel His presence, and come to love Him through the Holy Spirit and the written Word. Those who saw Jesus and believed were blessed indeed, but the Word says in John 20:29b “Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believe.” In a way, I think it is easier to believe today. All we have to do is open our hearts to Him with a simple prayer, confessing our realization that we are indeed sinners and in need of forgiveness. Ask Him, as the Christ who offered His life to pay for our sins, to forgive you, and surrender your life to Him. Then He, by His Holy Spirit takes care of the details as you continue to walk with Him.
Thank you Lord Jesus, what a wonderful Savior Your are. You truly are the Son of God.
