It might be considered that it was easier to obey God, in the days when the Bible was being written, when people heard God speak audibly, or saw signs like a burning bush, or had angels bring messages from God directly to them. It seems like God doesn’t speak out loud for us to hear clearly anymore, and I think this is most probably because of His mercy. If He did speak in an audible voice on a daily basis, we would be without excuse. You could even wonder if His speaking audibly would eliminate free will altogether, not that it would, but is it possible, since God is so awesome, and His speaking is so powerful that He spoke creation into existence.
God did, however, create us in His image; body, soul, and spirit, we are in the image of God. “God is Spirit and those that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth,” John 4:24. He gave us the means to reach Him and to hear his voice. “It is the Spirit who gives life, the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken unto you are spirit and are life,” John 6:63. Here we see that His very Word is Life.
God speaks today through His Spirit and through His Word. He also speaks through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, through word’s of knowledge, words of wisdom, through Spirit filled brothers and sisters. He will never speak anything contrary to HIs written Word, or His nature. If anything spoken to us in His name is not 100% in line with His Word, or His nature, it is not from God. Hebrews 3:15 says, “Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts, as when they provoked me.”
To hear God speak, we have to spend time with Him in His Word, getting to know Him and His nature. We have to learn to trust Him and His Word, and by spending time with Him and listening. Getting His Word into us important, He speaks using His Word directly many times. God is still speaking. He is waiting for us to surrender our lives to Him, to allow Him to come in and gently direct our paths. His Word is alive and will operate in us to change us day by day. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says,“But we all with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory even as from the Lord, the Spirit.
The world gets so fast paced and noisy. We really do need to stop and take the time to be alone with our heavenly Father, to thank Him for the gift of His Son, and for the precious Holy Spirit that lives in us, His children, today. The more we honor Him and His Word, and take time to thank Him, the easier we will find it is to hear His speaking.
God’s ways are marvelous. They are so much higher than ours. Though we may not hear His voice boom from heaven today, we can trust Him with our lives, our everything. He is just as faithful, He is still speaking, and He loves to find us… listening.
