I met a man once who insisted that his sins were so great they could not be forgiven. Try as I might to convince him otherwise, his mind was made up, and a very dark cloud came over him even as he talked about the subject. I didn’t ask what his sins were, but I perceived they had to do with his military service. I left the topic alone.
It has been a number of years now, and I am still bothered that this man believed his sin was unforgivable. It was not. No sin is unforgivable if we are truly sorry and ask God to forgive us. Oh I know, some will say blasphemy of the Holy Spirit cannot be forgiven, and that is true, but when you do that, you don’t care about or even think to ask to be forgiven. No, his sin, that was blocking him from being forgiven was not blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, but underestimating the power of the Blood of Jesus.
John 1:29 says, “ The next day John saw Jesus coming to him and said, ‘behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’”
This was not an ordinary man. This was Jesus the Son of God, born of a virgin. Fully God and fully man. John 14:9 says, “He that has seen me has seen the Father”. Jesus is God and He is sinless. It is impossible for God to sin. He shed His sinless Blood for us. There is no limit to the power of the Blood of Jesus. One drop could cleanse the sins of the whole world. What was lacking in this man’s case was understanding. We must believe in the power of His precious Blood.
There was a time in my life when I wondered if perhaps I had gone beyond God’s reach. Bad teachings from a legalistic church had taught me in error. But fortunately I was grounded in the word and I remembered what it said in the book of Hebrews 4:16 “Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” I did just that. I said, “Father, I am not sure you can help me, I may have gone beyond the reach of your forgiveness, but I am going to do what it says in the book of Hebrews and come boldly to your throne of Grace to find help in this my time of need.” Instantly the place I was sitting was filled with the presence of God and the weight of the world lifted off my shoulders. I didn’t have to ask if I was forgiven, I knew that I was. I was filled with Joy and could not stop praising and thanking Him. I knew that the Blood of Jesus was more than enough to cover my sin.
Have faith, go boldly to the throne of grace. You too, will find His Blood is more than enough to cover your sin.
